Lettering – New York City Ballet – Sleeping Beauty
Design
Ink and watercolour were used to create a variety of textures incorporating black and gradients of greys, a visual treatment exploring the darkness and movement through sleep to awakening. Capturing both the atmosphere and the narrative of the fairy tale ‘Sleeping Beauty’.
Ink lines capturing the growth of a rose – pushing up through the darkness towards the light. With hand written type, key words of the narrative appearing out of the ink bleed and textures.
The visual opposites of dark to light, good and evil represented.
Subtle secondary colours of pale pinks, reds and golden yellows appearing behind the blossoming rose.
